One of the obvious consequences of the fall of Adam and Eve is stated in Genesis 3:7, “Then the eyes of both were opened, and they realised they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”
They realised that something happened to them, that is, they were stripped of their God-given covering and they felt shame…. Consequently, they made a covering for themselves. Obviously, the solution to their nakedness that they both came up with was not adequate, it was heart-breaking from God’s perspective.
Hence, we read in Genesis 3:21, “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” Here we learn that any man-made solution to remedy his spiritual condition is bound to fall short of the will and plan of God for humankind.
See, the Lord God was the one who clothed Adam and Eve when he created them. Sadly, they allowed Satan to strip them of their God’s given original clothing and replaced it with their own inadequate clothing, namely, sown leaves and, obviously, God could not bear seeing them fallen so low (cf. Romans 3:23). Hence, he made them garments of skin and clothed them.
Here we have the revelation of God as the one who clothes his creation/creatures (cf. Matthew 6:30). After reading Matthew 6:30 I realised that the obvious consequence of the fall of Adam and Eve that we read about in Genesis 3:7 implies that Adam and Eve became the only creatures of God found naked in the whole of creation (no wonder they sought to cover their nakedness) -note that Jesus says God clothes even the grass of the field!…
Apparently, even God’s making garment of skin for Adam and Eve was only a temporary solution for the only solution, final solution, is to restore to humankind the original clothing. I believe that is what Apostle Paul hints at in 2Corinthians 5:2-3, “Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked”…..
Here we have spiritual awakening revealed in Paul’s life: He came to the spiritual realisation of his nakedness which made him groan inwardly longing to be clothed. It means that we are all naked until God clothe us again with our “heavenly dwelling”. What a glorious hope in store for us who believe in Jesus Christ!
May the Lord God grant us true spiritual awakening, in Jesus’ name!
