Psalm 92:6-7 (NIV), “Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand, [7] that though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.”

The word “forever” is the key concept in the above verses. The wise looks at life in general from the perspective of eternity. We’re told that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10).

Hence, the Lord Jesus said, “what good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Matthew 8:36) -talking about being pragmatic within the framework of eternity, which is the perspective of the Kingdom of God.

Jesus asks a rhetorical question in Matthew 8:36. It means that the answer to it is, or should be, obvious to all, but not to senseless people and fools for they have no clue regarding the concept eternity.

We’re talking here about the kind of people who would say “let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die” (1Corinthians 15:32) because they believe that life is meaningless (nihilism) since there is nothing after death. Isn’t true that anyone who finds life meaningless cannot escape the temptation to give a meaning to his/her own life?….

Interestingly, Psalm 92:6-7 is really telling us how senseless people and fools are begotten, namely, as the consequence or result of not knowing and not understanding that the wicked and all evildoers will be destroyed forever, that is, in eternity.

Simply put, eternity, as the realm of perfection, has no room for the wicked and evildoers. It means that how we live and what we do in this life will determine what happens to us in the hereafter. Someone rightly said, there is life after life and the “after life” is the real/authentic life….

Accordingly, we need to understand that failing to promote/teach, and believe in, the concept of eternity has potential to shape our societies accordingly. The increase of senseless people and fools, which accounts for wickedness in a society, is often/always proportionate to the size of the population without a good grasp of the concept of eternity in terms of accountability.

Please note the contrast in our text: Springing up and flourishing vs being destroyed forever. Springing up and flourishing in this life vs being destroyed forever (in eternity). Here it is important to understand that the focus is on springing up and flourishing on account of wickedness and doing evil, that is, at the expenses of others or even destroying much and treating God (Creator) with contempt in the process -talking about the pattern of this world (Romans 12:1, 2).

Believe me, you don’t want to be deemed successful in this life only to be lost in the hereafter (eternity). I pray that you come to knowing and understanding that although wicked people and evil doers spring up like grass and flourish, they will be destroyed forever. Please, let it not be your portion.

Finally, let me draw your attention to John 3:16 (NIV), “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Please note, eternal life is not eternal destruction/perdition….

May God help us all!
